Actor Leslie Nielsen dies at age 84

Leslie Nielsen, who traded in his dramatic persona for inspired bumbling as a hapless doctor in "Airplane!" and the accident-prone detective Frank Drebin in "The Naked Gun" comedies, died on Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 84. The Canadian-born actor died from complications from pneumonia at a hospital near his home at 5:34 p.m., surrounded by his wife, Barbaree, and friends, his agent John S. Kelly said in a statement.
"We are saddened by the passing of beloved actor Leslie Nielsen, probably best remembered as Lt. Frank Drebin in 'The Naked Gun' series of pictures, but who enjoyed a more than 60-year career in motion pictures and television," said Kelly.
Nielsen came to Hollywood in the mid-1950s after performing in 150 live television dramas in New York. With a craggily handsome face, blond hair and 6-foot-2 height, he seemed ideal for a movie leading man.
Nielsen first performed as the king of France in the Paramount operetta "The Vagabond King" with Kathryn Grayson.
The film — he called it "The Vagabond Turkey" — flopped, but MGM signed him to a seven-year contract.
His first film for that studio was auspicious — as the space ship commander in the science fiction classic "Forbidden Planet." He found his best dramatic role as the captain of an overturned ocean liner in the 1972 disaster movie, "The Poseidon Adventure."
He became known as a serious actor, although behind the camera he was a prankster. That was an aspect of his personality never exploited, however, until "Airplane!" was released in 1980 and became a huge hit.
As the doctor aboard a plane in which the pilots, and some of the passengers, become violently ill, Nielsen says they must get to a hospital right away.
"A hospital? What is it?" a flight attendant asks, inquiring about the illness.
"It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now," Nielsen deadpans.
When he asks a passenger if he can fly the plane, the man replies, "Surely you can't be serious."
Nielsen responds: "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley."
Critics argued he was being cast against type, but Nielsen disagreed.
"I've always been cast against type before," he said, adding comedy was what he'd really always wanted to do.
It was what he would do for most of the rest of his career, appearing in such comedies as "Repossessed" (a takeoff on the demonic possession movies like "The Exorcist") and "Mr. Magoo," in which he played the title role of the good-natured bumbler.
Nielsen did play Debbie Reynolds' sweetheart in the popular "Tammy and the Bachelor," a loanout to Universal, and he became well known to baby boomers for his role as the Revolutionary War fighter Francis Marion in the Disney TV adventure series "The Swamp Fox."
Unhappy with his roles at MGM, he asked to be released from his contract. As a freelancer, he appeared in a series of undistinguished movies. "I played a lot of leaders, autocratic sorts; perhaps it was my Canadian accent," he reasoned. Meanwhile, he remained active in television in guest roles. He also starred in his own series, "The New Breed," "The Protectors" and "Bracken's World," but all were short-lived. Then "Airplane!" captivated audiences and changed everything. Producers-directors-writers Jim Abrahams, David and Jerry Zucker had hired Robert Stack, Peter Graves, Lloyd Bridges and Nielsen to spoof their heroic TV images in a satire of flight-in-jeopardy movies. After the movie's success, the filmmaking trio cast their newfound comic star as Detective Drebin in a TV series, "Police Squad," which trashed the cliches of "Dragnet" and other cop shows. Despite good reviews, NBC canceled it after only four episodes. "It didn't belong on TV," Nielsen later commented. "It had the kind of humor you had to pay attention to." The Zuckers and Abraham converted the series into a feature film, "The Naked Gun," with George Kennedy, O.J. Simpson and Priscilla Presley as Nielsen's co-stars. Its huge success led to sequels "The Naked Gun 2 1/2" and "The Naked Gun 33 1/3." His later movies included "All I Want for Christmas," "Dracula: Dead and Loving It" and "Spy Hard."
Between films he often turned serious, touring with his one-man show on the life of the great defense lawyer, Clarence Darrow. Nielsen was born Feb. 11, 1926 in Regina, Saskatchewan. He grew up 200 miles south of the Arctic Circle at Fort Norman, where his father was an officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The parents had three sons, and Nielsen once recalled, "There were 15 people in the village, including five of us. If my father arrested somebody in the winter, he'd have to wait until the thaw to turn him in." The elder Nielsen was a troubled man who beat his wife and sons, and Leslie longed to escape. As soon as he graduated from high school at 17, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, even though he was legally deaf (he wore hearing aids most of his life.) After the war, Nielsen worked as a disc jockey at a Calgary radio station, then studied at a Toronto radio school operated by Lorne Greene, who would go on to star on the hit TV series "Bonanza." A scholarship to the Neighborhood Playhouse brought him to New York, where he immersed himself in live television. Nielsen also was married to: Monica Boyer, 1950-1955; Sandy Ullman, 1958-74; and Brooks Oliver, 1981-85. Nielsen and his second wife had two daughters, Thea and Maura.

When hard-working TV producer Becky Fuller is fired from a local news program, her career begins to look as bleak as her hapless love life. Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon: 'We Are Pregnant!'

After months of media speculation, Mariah Carey and husband Nick Cannon are ready to break their silence for the first time. In a new, exclusive interview with Access Hollywood's Billy Bush from inside the couple's Manhattan home, Mariah and Nick confirmed they are expecting their first child together.
"Yes, we are pregnant, this is true!" Mariah told Billy of the baby that is due this spring. "It's been a long journey. It's been tough because I've been trying to hold on to a shred of privacy."
Mariah said that after months of media speculation, she had to speak out.
"At this point, there is no choice. I either talk or I hibernate," she said.
In the interview, which will air on Access Hollywood on Thursday, Mariah and Nick spoke candidly about their journey together, which included a terrifying miscarriage they experienced not quite two years ago. Mariah and Nick revealed they were getting ready to tell their friends and family the good news that they were expecting over the holidays back at that time, when they found out she was no longer pregnant.
"It kind of shook us both and took us into a place that was really dark and difficult," Mariah told Billy about the devastating miscarriage. "When that happened... I wasn't able to even talk to anybody about it. That was not easy."
After the miscarriage, Nick said that the experience has made them stronger as a couple and he admires Mariah's strength.
"It definitely brought us closer together," Nick told Billy. "It strengthened our relationship so much... She handled it so well."
Now that the word is out, Mariah and Nick say they plan to celebrate together and with their friends and family.
"The greatest gift on earth is a child," Nick said. "We've had names picked out from the first day we met and we want to stay true to that."

Brand, Perry wed at tiger reserve in India

British comedian Russell Brand and American pop singer Katy Perry were married Saturday at a luxury resort in a tiger reserve in northwestern India, a hotel official said. A Hindu priest conducted the ceremony, which was attended by family and close friends of the couple, the hotel official said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the media.
Security has been stringent with private security guards stationed at the resort and other nearby hotels where guests and the couple are staying for the six-day wedding celebration.
Photographers and media reporters were not allowed into the Aman-e-Khas wildlife retreat. The couple have given the exclusive coverage rights to a London magazine, and no other photographers or journalists will be allowed into the resort.
The wedding venue was lit with lamps, colorful lights illuminated the trees and flower garlands festooned the luxury tents at the resort, the hotel official said.
Both Brand and Perry wore traditional Indian clothes to the wedding, the hotel official said. Perry donned a sari, as did a number of other female guests at the ceremony. On Friday, at a prenuptial celebration, Perry, like a typical Indian bride, had henna designs applied on her palms and hands.
Meanwhile, a four-member committee had been set up to check noise pollution from the wedding celebration and ensure that animals in the wildlife reserve in India's Rajasthan state are not disturbed, said Ravi Kumar, a district official.
The Ranthambhore National Park, where the resort is located, is home to a host of wildlife species including tigers, leopards, wild boars, hyenas and sloth bears.
Brand's wedding procession, accompanied by traditional Indian musicians, made its way from Sher Bagh, another nearby luxury resort, to the Aman-e-Khas retreat.
Brand proposed to Perry in the historic Indian city of Jaipur over New Year's Eve, and the couple decided to get married in India.
The 26-year-old Perry's second album, "Teenage Dream," was one of this year's best-sellers.
Brand, 35, is known for his drug-addled past and hedonistic tendencies. He is next set to star as Trinculo in "The Tempest" and the title character in a remake of "Arthur."

Beyonce pregnant with first child

Singer Beyonce Knowles and her rapper husband Jay-Z are expecting their first child, US Weekly magazine reported on Wednesday. The 29-year-old Beyonce was surprised to learn she is in her first trimester of the pregnancy. She had wanted to finish another album but was overjoyed, the U.S. magazine said.
One of the music world's most influential and wealthy couples, Beyonce and Jay-Z, 40, whose real name is Shawn Carter, were married in a secretive ceremony in New York in 2008.
The rapper is set to release a memoir in November called "Decoded," while Beyonce earlier this year completed a world tour promoting her 2008 hit studio album, "I am...Sasha Fierce."
A representative for the couple could not be immediately reached.

Hollywood Legend Tony Curtis dies at Las Vegas home (1925-2010)

The Clark County coroner says actor Tony Curtis has died.
Coroner Mike Murphy says Curtis died at 9:25 p.m. MDT Wednesday at his Las Vegas area home of a cardiac arrest.
Curtis, who had heart bypass surgery in 1994, began his acting career as a 1950s heartthrob but became a respected actor with such films as "The Defiant Ones" and "Sweet Smell of Success.
"The Defiant Ones" brought him an Oscar nomination in 1958 for his portrayal of a racist escaped convict handcuffed to a black escapee, Sidney Poitier. The following year, he co-starred in one of the most acclaimed film comedies ever, Billy Wilder's "Some Like It Hot."

Paul Conroy is not ready to die. But when he wakes up 6 feet underground with no idea of who put him there or why, life for the truck driver and family man instantly becomes a hellish struggle for survival. Buried with only a cell phone and a lighter, his contact with the outside world and ability to piece together clues that could help him discover his location are maddeningly limited. Poor reception, a rapidly draining battery, and a dwindling oxygen supply become his worst enemies in a tightly confined race against time - fighting panic, despair and delirium, Paul has only 90 minutes to be rescued before his worst nightmare comes true.
